About Cooper
Cooper is a global company with representation in every continent and an international reputation for excellence in the design and manufacture of split bearings.
All our products are made in England to the highest specifications. Our ISO 9001 accreditation shows you can rely on both our products and our processes, and we were recently awarded the ISO 14001 Environmental Standard for our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment.
We are also registered with Lloyds and BSI.
history
Cooper was established by Thomas Cooper, a prolific inventor and brilliant engineer, in 1894 in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, where the company is still based today. Mr Cooper’s first major invention was a revolutionary steam digger for use in arable farming. During the 1914-1918 war he invented and produced the first small aerial bombs of their kind. There was a point at which Thomas Cooper held more patents than any other single person in the country.
After Thomas Cooper’s death and throughout the second half of the 20th century the company focused on the ground-breaking split bearing he designed back in 1907. It swiftly became the number one split bearings in the world.
Throughout our decades of success Cooper has retained its family ethos, with employees serving an average of 22 years.
You’ll find this level of dedication and commitment brought to our work on your business too.
Research and development
In 1991 the Kaydon Corporation became Cooper’s parent company. While respecting the Cooper culture Kaydon has invested heavily in the latest technology necessary to keep Cooper one step ahead, recognizing that continuous research and development is essential to maintaining our position as market leader.
360 degree service
Over a century of innovation focused on perfecting our precision manufacturing techniques means we don’t simply develop and produce first class, premium quality, cost-effective bearings. We also have a wealth of experience to share with our customers, which means we can comprehensively support your business from the product selection stage through installation, training, maintenance and repair.
Trust Cooper to provide you with world-class technical support every step of the
way. Sound business sense
What makes Cooper split bearings the smart choice both for engineers and for business is their flexibility compared to solid bearings. Cooper split bearings are easier to install and more accessible once in place. Maintenance of your machinery is therefore more straightforward and less expensive. And revenue lost through downtime is radically reduced.

Cooper offers four standard bearings series to accommodate a variety of shaft sizes:
- 100 Series
For certain bore sizes in the range 75mm to 150mm Cooper also offer the 100 Series. Lighter duty than the 01 series, it is more compact and capable of higher operating speeds. - 01/01E Series
The most commonly used, 01 / 01E series are intended for medium duty applications with a wide range of speeds. 01E series are available in 45mm to 105mm size range, and 160mm to 300mm size range, and offer enhanced load carrying capabilities, and can be considered for applications where 02 series were previously considered. - 02/02E Series
The 02 Series offers a more rugged bearing solution for demanding applications where the 01 Series may not be suitable. The 02 Series also operates over a wide range of speeds. For a given shaft size, the 02 Series offers more radial and axial capacity than the 01 Series.02E series are available in 160mm to 300mm size range, and with enhanced load carrying capabilities, they can be considered for applications where 03 series were previously considered. - 03 Series
Designed for extreme loading conditions the 03 Series tops the capacity of the 02 Series and offers the highest load ratings of all standard series.
Split Tapered Bearings

- Tapered Bearing
The Cooper split tapered bearing is intended for the ‘fixed’ bearing position of shafts where there are both radial and axial loading and our split roller bearing is unsuitable.
It is constructed with two rows of opposed rollers to take axial loading in either direction.
While specifically designed for the marine industry, these split tapered bearings can also be used in other applications such as double-inlet fans in a number of different industries.
They are mounted in a cartridge in a similar way to that of the Split Roller Bearing and are machined with grease groove seals as standard and also provision made for a temperature element.

Flat Thrust
Flat thrust bearings can be placed either vertically or horizontally to take axial loads. They can also work in conjunction with other bearings (e.g.: radial) in one single arrangement. Cooper flat thrust bearings are used on gearboxes in power stations and cement works, air pre-heaters and coal pulverisers in power stations and water and sewage pumps and many other applications.
We can supply flat thrust bearings in custom-made designs and bore sizes from 60mm to 600mm to suit your individual application’s requirements. They are supplied un-mounted to be incorporated directly, but we can also create special housingsif required.
All Cooper flat thrust bearings are made to order.

04 Series
Cooper 04 Series bearings are specialized bearings for lighter duties at large bore sizes. 04 Series bearings are capable of high speeds, but are also used on lower speed applications. Use of these bearings at high speeds requires special attention to lubrication.
If the bearing is to be used at slow speeds only it may be possible to omit some of the ‘high speed’ features of the bearing, allowing a more economical bearing specification.
Generally, these bearing are available in expansion ‘EX’ and ‘GR’ types. Alternative configurations are possible where appropriate.
These bearings may be subjected to a degree of adaptation to suit application requirements. They may also be supplied with slightly different bore sizes to those under which they are listed.

Full Row
For slow speed applications (up to approximately 10,000mm dn, depending on size and series) we can supply cageless bearings with a full complement of rollers. These have the same overall dimensions as standard GR and EX bearings, but have higher dynamic and static capacities. This may allow a lighter series of bearing to be selected (e.g. 01 Series instead of 02 Series) resulting in a more compact, and sometimes more economical, solution.

Over 600mm
Generally, these bearings are available in expansion ‘EX’ or fixed ‘GR’ types. Extra expansion ‘Exilog’ types are also made regularly, but often have different envelope dimensions (in particular, the inner race is usually wider).
Lighter duty 04 Series bearings are shown separately.
It is always advisable to contact Cooper when specifying large bearings.

Water Cooled
Water-cooled bearing units for continuous casting machines are generally customised to individual applications. Bearings are of the 071 or 081 Series, which are designed specifically for this type of application. The general features of a typical design are illustrated above.
Bearings of the type illustrated may also be applied to other slow moving applications (generally under 15rpm) where a high capacity bearing is required in a compact envelope.
If you wish to specify Cooper water-cooled bearing units, or bearings of the 071 or 081 Series, please contact our technical department with details of the application.
